Don en ligne : Cycling Across Canada, an Asthmatic’s Journey

Serge ChantalMy cycling performances

2001

First cycle touring expedition - Project: Cycling around Prince Edward Island

Number of people: 2 (mon frère et moi)

We learned a lot from this experience, because mechanical problems, bad weather and lack of experience forced us to put an end to our trip after approximately 350 km in three days.

We have learned to:

-         Study the mechanics of our bicycle

-         Bring clothes for any and all situations while having a reasonable load on the bicycle

-         Gather more information about where we are going

2002

Second expedition - Project:             Québec - Lac-à-la-Tortue - Trois-Rivières - Longueuil - Burlington (USA) - Longueuil

Number of people: 2 (my brother and I)

Everything went well; we cycled our longest day during that trip, i.e. 186 km with 120 lbs of luggage on our bicycle.

Total of 1,110 km in 7 days

That time, we were ready!

2003

Third expedition - Project: Around Lac-St-Jean and Randonnée des Gouverneurs

Number of people: 4 (my brother and myself, with our spouses)

We did not encounter any problems during this trip and our spouses liked their experience.

Total of 286 km in 5 days

That year, my brother and I also completed the Randonnée des Gouverneurs linking Trois-Rivières and Québec.

The route is approximately 140 km.

We also made other biking trips on weekends.

2004

Fourth expedition - Project: The Yamaska

Number of people: 3 (My brother, myself and our nephew who was 15 years old at the time)

Everything went well, except that our nephew abandoned after two days, when we  stopped at his grandparents' place. His parents were there and he decided to go back with them. He nonetheless covered 150 km in two days, and for a first time out, it is very good!

Total of 225 km in 3 days

Fifth expedition - Project: Québec - Îsle-aux-Coudres - Québec

Number of people: 2 (my brother and I)

No problems to declare. However, during this trip, we had to climb a 22-km long hill at 22 %, the "Côte à Godin." It was so steep we had to zigzag up the hill!

Total of 322 km in 3 days

2005

Sixth expedition - Project : St-Basile-Le-Grand - Ottawa - St-Basile-Le-Grand

Number of people: 2 (my brother and I)

Everything went well. It was my only long trip that year because after purchasing my first house, I had to take some vacation time to do some work on the house.

Total of 652 km in 6 days

2006

Seventh expedition - Project : St-Georges de Beauce - Bar-Harbor - St-Georges de Beauce

Number of people: 7 (my brother, myself and 5 of our friends)

This was our first group experience. Our friends had never done tour cycling before. We had advised them to get ready one year in advance, which they did. The trip went fine, except of course for several mechanical problems (flat tires, broken chains, spokes, etc.).

Total of 1252 km in 7 days

2007

Eighth expedition - Project : St-Basile-Le-Grand - New York State - Vermont - St-Basile-Le-Grand

Number of people: 5 (my brother, myself and 3 of our friends)

I had my first fall, but nothing broken!

Total of 323 km in 3 days

Ninth expedition - Project : The Québec - Charlevoix Grand Tour

Number of people: 2,000 (my brother and I were among the participants)

Everything was OK before I reached 525 km, when I suddenly had my first pulled muscle (there is a first time for everything). Unfortunately, I could not finish the last 750 km. And... my summer cycling was over!

Total of 525 km in 5 ½ days

2008

Tenth expedition - Project: Five Boro Bike Tour in New York

Number of people: 1,200 I think! (my brother, myself and 10 of our friends)

No problem.

Total of 70 km in one day

Eleventh expedition - Project: Southern tip of Nova Scotia

Number of people: 6 (my brother, myself and 6 of our friends)

Only a few flat tires and a broken spoke during the trip.

Total of 656 km in 5 days

Twelfth expedition - Project: Lac-St-Jean with the Hydro-Québec Tour

Number of people: 600 (my brother, myself and 6 of our friends)

No problem during the expedition.

Total of 286 km in 3 days

Thirteenth expedition - Project: Around Mauricie

Number of people: 6 (my brother, myself and 4 of our friends)

Nothing to declare.

Total of 557 km in 5 day

This completes my cycling performances. However, my one-day trips are not included.

Now, my goal is across Canada.
